The damp and dreary morning didn't affect the opening of Physicians Regional Medical Center-Collier Boulevard.

And the first patient, a reluctant one, is already being treated.

About 15 minutes after the hospital's opening at 7 a.m., the hospital's first patient walked through the doors.

Complaining of an eye infection, the man in his early 70s was registering when hospital spokeswoman Christina Anstett told him that he was the first person being treated.

"I didn't want to be the first patient," he said before being whisked away for treatment.

Expected to serve patients from East Naples, Marco Island, Golden Gate and beyond, the 100-bed, 200,000-square-foot hospital is owned by Naples-based Health Management Associates, which also operates Physicians Regional Medical Center-Pine Ridge, formerly Cleveland Clinic.

The emergency room, which has 18 patient stations, was ready for its first patients when the doors officially opened at 7 a.m. on a chilly Monday morning. The hospital has four surgery suites, a 20-bed recovery unit and 12 intensive-care beds.

Physicians Regional Medical Center-Collier Boulevard has a women’s pavilion with six birthing suites, 12 post-partum/gynecology rooms and a nursery for 15 newborns.

Michael Mastej is chief executive officer of the hospital. Dr. Brian Flanagan is chief of emergency medicine. The $80 million, three-story hospital has 175 employees and 185 physicians.

Eventually, the hospital plans to employ 300. The three-story hospital with all private rooms can be expanded with another three floors to 420 beds.

A $25 million medical office building behind the hospital will open in a couple of months.

There are two other hospitals in Collier County. Those are operated by NCH Healthcare Systems – Downtown Naples Hospital off Eighth Street North and North Naples Hospital off Immokalee Road.
