ESTERO — Jack Ferenz and Jon Fiedler each fired 3-under-par 69s to tie for medalist honors at The ACE Group Classic qualifier at West Bay Club on Monday.
Ferenz was all but done with golf before making it through qualifying school for the 2006 season. But he could not retain his status, and with a new qualifying system in place, Ferenz has been forced to go from Monday to Monday, hoping to qualify.
“This is the first time I qualified,’’ Ferenz said. “I needed to get in.’’
Tim Conley, who was out in the first group off the back nine, shot a 70 to finish third. Dick Mast, Mitch Adcock, Rod Spittle and Woody Blackburn all shot 71s to grab the final four of the seven spots.
Seven golfers went off in a playoff for alternate positions.
Fort Myers’ Greg Hickman shot a 74 and John Calabria, who is membership director at The Golf Club at Fiddler’s Creek, had a 76.
There were 70 golfers in the field, including those who had made it through pre-qualifying at The Forest last Monday.
Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Bench was among the spectators at West Bay. He was following his father-in-law, Hugh Baiocchi. The veteran tour player shot a 74 and failed to qualify.
