Running back Jevon Pugh, who committed to Iowa, and defensive end Gelo Orange, who's going to Wake Forest, headed six Naples High football players to make their school choices on Tuesday.
Quarterback Tim Moscato is headed to Florida Atlantic; defensive back Jacques Bazile and wide receiver Gerald Stevenson chose Division I-AA Charleston Southern, and linebacker Pedro Molina is going to Evangel (Mo.), an NAIA school. Earlier, defensive back Junior Petit-Jean announced he was going to Wake Forest.
"You've got to love it,'' Naples coach Bill Kramer said of the commitments. "We had 39 kids that were on college football rosters this last fall. This follows that tradition. We're going to help them maximize their academic and athletic potential. I'm really proud of these guys.''
Pugh picked Iowa on Tuesday morning, selecting the Hawkeyes over Maryland, Kansas State and Toledo. Orange chose Wake Forest over Colorado and Indiana.
"It's good for him,'' Kramer said of Pugh. "He really liked Iowa. He liked Maryland too and had good trips to both of them, but ultimately just felt a lot more connected with the coaches and players at Iowa.''
"Gelo did a great job and got his test score, which we were waiting to see if he would qualify. As soon as that happened, he had to sort through Colorado, Indiana and Wake Forest among others. It's just great, him and Junior being able to go together and play for the ACC champions and the national coach of the year. It's a great opportunity for them.''
The 5-foot-10, 210-pound Pugh rushed for 1,832 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior. He was the Naples Daily News Offensive Player of the Year.
"He's a strong, inside the tackles type of runner," Naples High assistant coach Sam Dollar told recruiting Web site Rivals.com. "It takes more than one person to bring him down. They said he's exactly what they're looking for to play running back in the Big Ten."
Molina will join former Golden Eagle Beau Grech, who will be a junior linebacker this fall.
