So you think you can sing? Be at Nacho Mama’s next Thursday!

The 2007 Dancing With the Starz contest is nearing the finish line. But before the contestants meet for a final tally of funds Aug. 11, Howard and Michelle Jordan’s dream team have prepared a couple more nights of fun to raise money for their newly developed charity for local children, Upon A Star Foundation Inc.

Upon A Star has joined with Nacho Mama’s to present Marco’s newest So You Think You Can Sing contest, Aug. 2, at Nacho Mama’s Tex Mex Restaurant.

For $100, or if you find a business to sponsor you for $100, you can join other contestants to compete for the prize of Island’s best singer. There will be two levels of competition with first, second and third-place prizes. Children 16 and under will compete in one group; adults 17 years and older will compete in the second group.

For $250 you can be one of the judges to decide who will win one of the coveted prizes and help name the Island’s best singers. For $200 you can reserve a VIP booth, which seats up to six people. VIP tickets will ensure guests one of the best seats in the house nearest the stage. For $100 you can reserve a VIP booth which seats up to four people, slightly farther from the main karaoke stage. Seats at the bar can be reserved for $50 each. Reservations are highly suggested since there is such limited seating.

The event will be held Thursday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m. at Nacho Mama’s restaurant.

Anyone interested in attending without reservations can purchase tickets for $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12. All guests will be able to participate in karaoke singing. (Only those with a $100 sponsorship can compete in the official contest.)

A dinner for eight prepared by renowned Chef Tony Rainone, owner of Crazy Flamingo and part owner of Nacho Mama’s, will be available through a silent auction. The upscale dinner will be accompanied by several flavors from the Kendall Jackson winery, donated by Wayne and Liz Henuset. Starting bids begin at $1,000.

Chef Rainone who was originally trained at Johnson Wales Culinary School in Rhode Island has studied cooking techniques from around the globe. He offers special suggestions to those interested in bidding on the dinner for eight: a duck surf ‘n’ turf sushi roll, ostrich tataki, pan-seared sea scallops, seafood ceviche, or roasted corvine, which tastes like grouper, served with olive oil, anchovies and raisins.

“It sounds weird, but eats so well,” Rainone said of the corvine dish. Rainone has just returned from teaching cooking classes in Ecuador and says he can cook any type of meal from any region in the world. He, of course, says he would cook anything the winner’ wish, but wants to give people an idea of the kinds of high-caliber foods he is prepared to serve them.

“The suggestions are for people who want a unique experience and might not know where to start. ... When you include all the different kinds of wines that will be served, this really is an incredible deal.”

This celebration also marks the last chance to buy a raffle ticket for the Congress Jewelers Upon A Star necklace valued at $3,000. Tickets are $25 each or five for $100. The winner of this raffle contest will be chosen at Howard and Michelle Jordan’s final Starz event, a happy hour celebration at 6 p.m. Aug. 8 at Guy Harvey’s.
