It came down to the two best players in grades K through 5, Max Kimball, 10, and Kenneth Macallan, 6. As the two youngsters played the last round, at least a dozen curious spectators watched. Kimball came out with a win during his fifth and final game. Second place went to Macallan and third place to Tyler Toth. First, second and third place finishers were awarded a trophy. All players received a certificate for playing.

The goal for Saturday at Mackle Park was to prepare kids for a possible international chess tournament in the works for Marco Island in late November. The tournament will take place at a hotel on the island, contingent upon funding. The potential event would draw grand masters from all over the world to Marco Island for the first international tournament of it’s kind in Southwest Florida.

Chess enthusiast Mario Sanchez says he feels the tournament Saturday helped to prepare these talented youngsters for the strict rules and regulations of an international play date.

“When you see dedication like this at such a young age, you realize that it’s not about donating money for a chess tournament, it’s about helping kids,” Sanchez explains.

“I wish I had an opportunity to play chess in the same room with world class players when I was young. I hope the kids here on the island get the chance to experience it.”

Sanchez urges community members to attend MICE practices, Saturday mornings at 9 at Mackle Park, to see the dedication and passion these local youngsters have for the game. All winners of the weekend tournament regularly attend the weekly meetings.
