The state Board of Medicine has revoked the license of a Naples physician and imposed $90,000 in fines in connection with violations of medication dispensing standards and for a code of ethics infraction, according to state officials.

The three separate cases involve Dr. Harsh Sharma, an internist whose last known practice address was 217 Airport-Pulling Road S.

Sharma didn’t attend the medical board’s meeting Friday in Tampa when the board decided discipline for three administrative complaints against him, said Eulinda Jackson, spokeswoman for the state Department of Health.

In two of the complaints, Sharma had prescribed pain killers and other controlled substances to patients without keeping adequate medical records or obtaining complete medical histories. One complaint involved 19 patients he saw between 2000 and 2004, records show.

In the second complaint, Sharma was the subject of a joint undercover investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Agency and the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

In the third complaint, Sharma denied in a deposition that he had surrendered his medical license in New York state. He provided the false information in a deposition when he was a defendant in a medical malpractice case in Collier County in 2003, according to state documents.

In addition to the total $90,000 in fines and license revocation, the board ruled Sharma must reimburse the state $7,400 in legal fees, perform 100 hours of community service and complete a code of ethics course, Jackson said.
