They are the types of wines not readily found. But, there will be 10 boutique wines from Island Liquors at a wine-tasting from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, at 248 Dan River Court.
The event benefits For the Love of Cats, an all-volunteer, no-kill rescue shelter that Jim and Jan Rich started in October 2002. There will be entertainment by pianist Steve Purciello and a light selection of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres.
There also will be a raffle for gift baskets and a silent auction. Items will include wine baskets, a $25 gift certificate from Blue Heron with a $50 bottle of wine and a dog and cat basket from Critter Cafe.
Bernard “Dr. Grape” Oetting has worked with the Rich’s and Island Liquors to choose the wines. They include Moscato D’Asti, a wine that is light, slightly sweet and low in alcohol. Another wine is Francois Montand, Brut Rose,’ France.
“This is a terrific value. It is clean, toasty, soft, and really well-made,” Oetting said.
There’s also Riff Pinot Grigio, a top value Pinot Grigio with a score of 87 from Wine Spectator; Cartlidge & Browne Chardonnay, a plush, full-flavored Chardonnay with plenty of pear/apple fruit and citrussy, floral notes; Two Princes Riesling, a lovely, pure and calm wine with slate aromas and flavors; Cartlidge & Browne 2004 Merlot, a Gold Medal winner in the 2006 San Francisco Chronicle and Wine Judging competition.
Other wines sampled will include Crios Cabernet Sauvignon, an intense, dark ruby color wine with enticing aromas, rich texture and amazing long finish; Terra Rosa Malbec, from Argentina, dense but light, pure fruit flavors that delight the palate; 2005 Sonoma Zinfandel, elegantly rich purity of fruit with infused scents of pepper for a spicy essence; and Layer Cake Shiraz, an amazing wine from Australia’s famed Barossa Valley that is dark, dense, textbook Shiraz with a gorgeous mouth feel and clean finish.
Gerri Holgerson also will provide samples - a nougat bar, protein bar, omega bar and an active drink - of RichbyChocolate.com.
“The difference between their products and other dark chocolates on the market is that these products are cold processed so that the antioxidant qualities in the chocolate are not depleted through the normal heat processed method,” Jan Rich said.
Tickets for the wine-tasting are $40 each or $75 per couple. Call Jan Rich at 642-8674 or buy a ticket at the door. The dress is island casual, no shorts please.
Since its inception in 2002, the couple has housed and cared for more than 500 rescued cats in their air-conditioned garage. The primary mission is trapping and sterilizing all stray cats on the island. For the Love of Cats Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit organization and donations are tax-deductible.
“Should be a great event,” Jan Rich said. “It’s for the kitties.”
