The Marco Island Foundation for the Arts held a meeting and luncheon May 16, at the Marco Island Yacht Club, led by the organization’s president, Jo-Ann Sanborn.
Among the honors was a tribute to Nick Campo of Marco Movies, the presentation of Island student scholarships and a performance by the Naples Opera Society.
Campo was first honored with the presentation of a plaque and a thank you for his help in providing the community with this year’s MIFA art film series.
“When the foundation asked for help, he immediately provided the support we needed,” said Sanborn.
“The Marco Island Foundation of the Arts makes it a priority to team up with businesses on Marco in order to better ... the community — as the foundation did with its art film series (presented throughout the beginning of this year at Marco Movies).”
Karen Dowling, who headed the MIFA scholarship committee, presented awards to three deserving Marco Island students who are all at the top of their class and involved in the arts in some way. Applicants went through a tough judging session, because the talent pool was very strong. Students were chosen based on portfolio submissions and interviews.
“We found an amazing pool of very talented kids on this Island. It is wonderful that we can honor three of them today,” Dowling said.
Honored with a scholarship in performing arts was Lely High School student Danielle Conelly, an oboe player who plans to study engineering or architecture at Princeton University in the fall.
The literary arts scholarship winner was awarded to writer Katlin Mulhere, also of Lely High, who will attend University of Florida this fall.
Emiliano Paatner of St. John Neumann was awarded a scholarship for his work in visual arts. Paatner plans to study biomedical engineering at Florida State University.
After the awarding of scholarships a special presentation and performance was put together for MIFA by the Naples Opera Society. President of the Naples Opera Society, Dr. Ron Bowman, Dr. Ron Doiron, artistic director of The Bach Ensemble in Naples and musical director St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Marco, and flautist Diane Ball performed.
The Marco Island Foundation for the Arts’ mission is to promote the visual, literary and performing arts in public places around Marco Island. It’s made up of a diverse group of individuals interested in enhancing the cultural life of the community.
The group meets the first Thursday of each month at Orion Bank. For more information, call Sandi Johnson at 642-0015.
