To a ‘T’: New shirts the right fit for TBE students

Next year when Tommie Barfield Elementary students pull on their school T-shirts, Lexie Lundquist’s drawing of a mother and baby manatee will be proudly displayed on their chests.

Lexie, 10, a Tommie Barfield fourth-grader, learned Wednesday she had won an art competition. But this competition’s prize isn’t a trophy, instead her drawing will be the artwork on the 2006-2007 Tommie Barfield school T-shirts.

This is the third year the school has allowed students to design the artwork for the shirts, said Vee Young, a member of the Tommie Barfield PTO. Fourth-grade students are given the opportunity to design the shirts, and the whole school votes on its favorite.

“It’s a rite of passage,” Young said Wednesday. “The fourth-grade students get to design them and wear their design during their fifth-grade year.”

The winner of the T-shirt design contest was announced on the school’s morning show.

“This was a very tough vote and it was very close,” said Principal Jory Westberry. “But we’re thrilled to death to have all of this talent here at TBE.”

Lexie said it took two art classes to design her brightly colored picture. The theme was two manatees, the school’s mascot, swimming in the ocean. And even though she thought her artwork was good, she said she never thought she’s be the winner.

“I was surprised,” she said. “I was happy because I didn’t think I could win.”

Students will be able to wear their shirts during physical education and on spirit days next year, Young said. The 2006-2007 school year is the first year Tommie Barfield students will be required to wear a modified dress code.

“It’s kind of scary to think about people wearing my shirt,” Lexie said. “What if there’s a mistake, or looks bad on the T-shirt?”

Last year the school ordered about 625 T-shirts, Young said. Since the school had a surplus of T-shirts, Young said the parent-teacher-organization will probably order closer to 500 this year.

Parents can pre-order the 2006-2007 T-shirt. They can also purchase this year’s shirt, though sizes are limited, by calling the school.
