The Collier County Sheriff’s Office on Monday released the security footage from the Shelter for Abused Women and Children depicting the alleged battery that in part led to the shelter letting go its long-time CEO Kathy Herrmann Catino.
Catino, 57, was fired from the shelter in February amid allegations that she pushed a female employee. The State Attorney’s Office in Bartow, which was handling the case because the Collier County prosecutor’s office has a close working relationship with the shelter, reported it has dropped its investigation into the pushing incident.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office is also no longer investigating.
The video appears to show Catino catch up to a woman who is walking out of the shelter, grab her arm and turn her around.
The employee was distraught because a loved-one’s mother was in the hospital, Catino said, and she didn’t want her to drive.
"I was consoling a distraught employee that was crying. There were two eye-witnesses at the shelter that said the same thing," Catino said. "It was an outrageous accusation in the first placed that wasn’t fully investigated. I lost my job over it."
Catino said the lead detective on the case did not talk to two women who witnessed the incident.
"I wish that the Naples Daily News would put stories about men who beat their wives and girlfriends on the front page of the paper," Catino wrote in an e-mail Monday night. "I gave 14 years of my life to this community, trying my very best to change lives for the better and to save lives. I gave it everything I had. Now that is over and I want only to get on with my life."
