Mini-Black Friday might boost some Marco businesses

Traditionally, Black Friday sees the masses flocking to the off-island mega-stores, but some local retailers believe they’ll at least steer some of those discretionary dollars their way.

Sunshine Ace Hardware, which prides itself on personal service it says the big boys simply cannot offer because of logistics, expects a busier-than-normal day Friday.

Floor manager Gregg Fowles said the store offers some cut price items at this time to generate sales.

“People might be surprised at some of the prices,” Fowles said, adding that traditionally favorite Christmas items are things like power tools.

“We did well on Black Friday last year, and hope to do the same (Friday),” he said.

Over at Bill Smith, store manager Bill Gotham said he felt much the same way.

“We expect to be pretty busy,” he said, “not to the degree of the KMarts and Wal-Marts with their ultra-cheap things like TVs, but we offer better quality stuff ... tier one brands like Sony and Toshiba.”

He said over the Christmas season in general, it’s expected that LCD TVs will continue to sell extremely well, with DVD players and recorders performing positively as well.

Jet Set Surf Shop’s Shane Sparks said the store traditionally does well on Black Friday, but not necessarily because of the day’s historical significance.

“There are lots of people in town anyway,” Sparks said, and that’s good for us.”

Do not hold your breath. The City has plans for the few discretionary dollars we have left. We have to pay excessive sewer assessments and increased utility fees. All because the Council is borrowing money to accelerate a sewer system we do not require. They have already spent 30 million dollars and plan to spend much more before they leave office. All this equipment will be useless when the new council takes over. The current council is wasting our discretionary money for many years to come and the economy will eventually feel it big time. Thank Minozzi and his pals for sticking to their false principals. Dark clouds are about to descend upon Marco Island.
