Net Notes: Are you missing the point?
The most feedback I get from articles that I’ve written over many years is, without fail, generated by pieces on etiquette and conduct during matches.
My article last week was no exception to that rule. I received a memo at work to call Mr. O. There was no more than a phone number and a request to return his call.
The gentleman came to the phone and said that he enjoyed reading my column in the Eagle every week but had an issue with my piece that week on the rules relating to rest breaks.
Aside from the fact that he and his crew could use a little more than the allotted rest periods in the steam heat of South Florida, his comment was to the point that he and his tennis buddies, a group of active senior players, had more fun ribbing each other and telling tales than they did worrying about the score or the flow of the match as I suggested was important.
I apologize to Mr. O and his friends. You are absolutely right about the purpose of tennis. It’s to have fun and make friends.
Ribbing and joking and trying your best are the most important parts of any game or sport as far as I am concerned.
So Mr. O and the crew, point taken and respected.
For the rest of you: Maybe its you that your tennis group has issues with and complains to me about. Check out last week’s article if you haven’t seen it, or if someone slipped it into your tennis bag please take a moment to read it.
Keep it fun!
