Three-hundred invitations for the 2008 Naples Winter Wine Festival hit the mail today. By Wednesday, another 900 will be enroute to potential attendees.

For the first time, the invitation-only festival kicks it off at one of the 21 beneficiary's facilities: That's a Jan. 24 VIP party at Naples Equestrian Challenge Inc., which offers therapeutic riding for disabled children in Collier County. The festival runs through Jan. 27.

The festival can only accommodate 550. Admission to all main events is $7,500 for two and $20,000 for four.

"We usually sell-out by the RSVP date," says Dawn Montecalvo, executive director of the Naples Children & Education Foundation, which organizes the festival. RSVPs are due Nov. 15.

The 36-page, spiral-bound invitation includes a rundown of the festival including the featured vintners, chefs and themes for the 17 coveted private dinners on Jan. 25.

Mondavi to debut wine

If you're attending the 2008 wine festival, you may be lucky enough to be among the first to try Continuum. After a barrel tasting in early 2007, Wine Spectator writer James Laube described the 60 percent cabernet with equal parts of petit verdot and cabernet franc as "powerful yet restrained and graceful ... every bit as good as Mondavi's finest efforts."

Continuum is the work of three generations of winemakers, says Dawn Montecalvo, executive director of the Naples Children & Education Foundation, which organizes the festival. Notably Tim Mondavi, who left the Robert Mondavi Corp. in 2003. Although it's not scheduled to be released until March 2008, a case will be served during the festival.
