For any Tommie Barfield Elementary students dreaming of becoming a writer, last week’s guest speaker gave them their first glimpse into the process of becoming a published author.
Barbara Schmitz Garriel, an accomplished children’s author and former schoolteacher, came to Marco from Bayville, New York last week to talk to students about writing. She held a total of six presentations on April 8 and 9.
Garriel’s Powerpoint lecture, which she calls an “author presentation,” went over the steps a writer must go through to have a book published. She included steps of her creative process, the editing procedures that her story went through and the finishing touches of a book’s completion.
During the author presentation, Garriel read her book “I Know a Shy Fellow Who Swallowed a Cello” — a vegetarian inspired version of “There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.”
Garriel encouraged the attending students to practice writing by focusing on their interests.
“Do the things that you love to do with your life,” said Garriel. “And write about the things that you care about.”
