Art League, Marco Island’s Center for the Arts Summer Wine and Art Series will culminate on Aug. 5 featuring a variety of wines from 5:30 to 7 p.m., in addition to the opening of a special exhibit of art by Jo-Ann Sanborn.

The Summer Wine and Art Series has been an opportunity to experience a taste in wine and art. Guests will enjoy one last opportunity to sample three to six wines, enjoy some palate pleasing hors d’oeuvres and engage with this month’s featured artist in residence, Jo-Ann Sanborn. A special installation of her work will be on exhibit from Aug. 5 through 29.

Admission to each event is free for members of the Art League, Center for the Arts, with a $5 admission for guests.

Jo-Ann Sanborn is a well-known painter in South Florida, and has exhibited her paintings from Marco Island to Gloucester, Mass.

The Florida landscape has become the focus of her work and provides unlimited inspiration. Her strong compositional arrangements combined with uncommon colors bring a simplicity and integrity to the unique landscape. Sanborn is the first artist since the legendary Highwaymen to interpret the South Florida landscape in a strong, unique way. She hopes that enjoyment of her work will also foster a more profound respect for the threatened landscape that she portrays.

Sanborn has had several solo shows and been granted numerous awards for her paintings including the prestigious Best of Show at the Marco Art League’s Fine Arts Show, an Award of Excellence in the Founders Exhibit of the Naples Art Association’s Von Liebig Art Center, S. Margot Knapp award for works on canvas by the National Association of Women Artists, and has frequently won “Judge’s Choice,” and “Judge’s Preference” awards. She has been featured on WGCU-TV’s arts program “Expressions.”

Sanborn teaches workshops on color and the Florida Landscape. She is a distinguished member of several art organizations, including the National Association of Women Artists, and is an active member of the Marco Island Center for the Arts, and the Naples Arts Association. Numerous articles have been written about her work, and she was Cover Artist for Naples Guide, Premier Properties “Presenting Southwest Florida’s Finest Properties,” and the city of Marco Island Budget.

Sanborn attended Becker College in Worcester, Mass., and studied under the tutelage of Johanna Murphy of Hartford, Conn. She has participated in a number of workshops with other nationally noted artists and believes artists must continue to learn on a daily basis.

Sanborn’s paintings are in corporate and private collections throughout the United States and in Europe. She is represented by The Studio Gallery on Marco Island and Magdalena Gallery of Fine Art in Carmel, Ind. She lives and works on Marco Island, where she maintains her studio.

Artist Statement: Jo-Ann Sanborn

Color, light and the fascinating forms of our semi-tropical south Florida landscape are my inspiration. Interesting arrangements of positive and negative shapes in the landscape are especially attractive to me. I paint in and around Marco Island, and especially enjoy painting the beauty of the nearby Everglades. Working “en plein air” whenever possible, sometimes using photos when time and weather dictate studio work.

I strive to capture the essence of the magic moments when light and landscape come together as a gift from nature. That particular moment will never come again in exactly that way. I want to move the viewer to become personally involved with an appreciative response to the landscape and these special moments.

There is a connection between the spirituality of undisturbed natural places and the depth of our humanity. In addition, the future of our very survival as a species depends on valuing and preserving these natural places that are necessary to the health of our planet. It is my hope that enjoyment of my paintings will bring an increased awareness and appreciation of the value of this beautiful, fragile world.
