None of the golfers saw any, but the Eagle soared at its 35th Annual Open Saturday at The Rookery at Marco.

In a team scramble, with each player hitting from where the best shot of a team member had been struck, Tom Wagor, Kyle Rayburn and Pasquale Evangelista, won with a score of 57.

Individual honors went to Alex Parker III and Mary Vertin for longest drives and Kyle Rayburn and Jacquie Koon for closest to the pin.

Volunteer Wanda Day provided hand-made cooler collar ties for the warm day for each player, while the Noontime Rotary Club provided umbrellas.

Major sponsors included the Marco Eagle, Marco Community Bank, Island Mortgage and The Rookery at Marco, along with Erin’s Isle.

The Eagle Open is the oldest charitable event on Marco Island.

“It was a great event and everything went smoothly,” said Dick Shanahan, event chairman. “The course was in great shape and The Rookery at Marco people were very helpful. We had a number of really nice prizes. Our committee and volunteers make this a successful event each year.”

The event raised more than $10,000, with the money going to Marco charities, particularly to the Marco Island Charter Middle School.

Volunteer committee members included George Abounader, Roy Birkeland, Chuck Canfield, Wanda Day, David Klein, Stan Niemczyk, Mary Quinton, Debra Sanders, George Schroll, Dottie Weiner and Shanahan.

Additional volunteers were Pat Birkeland, Lisa Butler, Jim Curran, John Kenney, Tom Kirstein, Keith Kirstein, Donna Niemczyk, Jack Patterson, Jim Prange and John Scott.
