An old classic TV program was called “That Was the Week That Was” hosted by David Frost. The program reviewed the week that had just concluded: the ups and downs, the good and bad. I do the same thing in this column each week with one obvious exception... there is no bad to report.
Summer camp week 10 was one of the busiest weeks here at the “Y.” The camp itself had more than 100 students attending. The theme for the week was “King Author’s Court.” This is always a very popular theme as the campers activities are based on this period in history.
Campers made their own suits of armor using cardboard and aluminum foil, costumes based on the middle ages and activities scheduled throughout the week to keep the campers entertained.
The Greater Marco YMCA also helps operate a camp at Eagle Lakes Park and more than 50 attended at that facility. Last, but not least, Manatee Elementary School camp is in full swing with more than 100 campers attending.
The campers had a great time going to Sun ‘N Fun Lagoon and bowling at Woodside Lanes.
Specialty Camps that began on Monday included British Challenge Soccer, All Skills Volleyball, Zoo Camp, Strength Training and Swim Lessons w/ Miss Dottie.
Participants in each camp enjoyed a jam-packed week of activities unique to their particular camp. Next week will be the final week of summer camp. Where has the time gone? The summer of 2008 has just zipped on by.
Theater camp will have their third and final camp of the summer and will stage “The Producers” at the Marco Players Theater.
Summer camp theme for week 11 will be “YMCA Spirit Week” with field trips planned for the Aquatic Center and Park, Generations Skating Rink for roller skating, Cambier Park and the Shy Wolf Sanctuary. Then, after a short recess, school begins and the “Y” shifts into fall 2008.
A lot of exciting programs are scheduled. The first is Saturday Family Snorkeling slated for August 23 and 30. Youth Indoor Co- Ed Soccer for grades K-5 will begin August 29 with a soccer assessment. A indoor instructional co- ed soccer program called Little Kickers” for those aged 3-5 years will begin in September. Also returning for fall 2008 is the ASPIRE Program. This program is for after school students and will begin on August 18. Registration for any and all of these programs are on going at your Greater Marco Family YMCA.
Volunteer tutors are needed for the Y READS! Program held at the Manatee Elementary School on Mondays thru Thursdays from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Become a mentor to these first and second grade students with reading deficiencies. Please call Jan Rotar if you would like to help. Her number is 394-3144, ext. 275.
Stop by your Greater Marco Family YMCA and take the tour. I know you will find our facility to your liking. We are located at 101 Sandhill Street. Visit the Web site at www.marcoislandymca.org . See you at the “Y.”
