The idea of the city taking over the electric utility is not new, however, the first formal committee meeting to discuss the issue will be held Monday.
The electric municipalization committee’s first meeting is 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Fire Station Training Room near the San Marco Road entrance.
Marco Island City Councilman Jerry Gibson is the non-voting chairman of the committee, which has approximately 30 members looking into whether the city may be able to better operate the electric utility than the islands current electricity provider, Lee County Electric Cooperative.
Serving as the city staff liaison, Public Works Director Rony Joel will be presenting the issue to the committee members. City Attorney Alan Gabriel will be instructing the members on the Sunshine Laws, which may require some members to not discuss city takeover of the electric utility outside of publicly announced meetings.
Joel said the primary goal of the committee remains “to identify the potential benefit to municipalization of electric service on Marco Island.”
