MARCO ISLAND — Marco Island City Council cancelled Monday's City Council meeting and rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 2.

The City Council Chairman Bill Trotter has declared a state of emergency for Marco Island in cooperation with the State of Florida and Collier County Emergency Management Center. City offices will be closed Tuesday with essential city staff on hand to assist during the emergency, according to a press release.

Parks and Recreation and Racquet Center facilities will be closed Tuesday and all programs cancelled. The facilities, including athletic fields, will reopen on Wednesday morning provided they are determined to be safe following initial damage assessments by city officials.

City officials are asking residents to monitor the weather, seek shelter and stay in one place. Residents that are located in low lying areas should have already sheltered to higher elevation or made arrangements to stay with people in higher elevations.

Tornados across Florida are of concern so residents should be careful during this storm.

Residents should anticipate tropical storm conditions beginning 9 p.m. Monday throughout Tuesday and possibly into early Wednesday morning, depending upon the storm’s movement. Tropical storm winds and flooding should be anticipated after 9 p.m. Monday. Higher winds are expected between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Tuesday. Winds and flooding should be expected all day Tuesday and continue through early Wednesday morning.

High tide is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday. Depending on storm surge exceptional flooding conditions could occur Tuesday with high tide, according to city officials.

Other city and county updates include:

•The Electric Municipalization Committee meeting has been rescheduled for 2:30 p.m. September 3.

• City Council did not conduct business Monday, but the meeting will be continued to 3 p.m. September 2.

• Collier County Public Schools are closed Tuesday, delaying the first day of school.

• Hurricane stickers may be needed to return to the island and are distributed at City Hall, the police department, and fire rescue Departments.

• There will be no commercial garbage pick up on Marco Island Tuesday.

• The early election offices on Marco Island have been suspended until after the storm passes.

• The weekly Tuesday fingerprinting at the Marco Island Police Department has been suspended and will resume next Tuesday.

• The tolls on Interstate 75 (Alligator Alley) have been suspended eastbound and westbound until further notice.

• Collier Area Transit will suspend fares for all riders beginning 3 p.m., Monday in order to get residents to and from emergency shelters. The requirement limiting the amount of items passengers may bring on board will also be relaxed during this time period. CAT fares will be suspended until the emergency shelters are closed and people are allowed to return to their homes.

Resident Tips:

• Bring in trash containers and help your neighbor by bringing in theirs too.

• Secure vessels.

• Secure loose yard items, including campaign and real estate signs.

• Stay tuned to the City’s website, Comcast Channel 12 and Marco Cable Channel 9.

• Refresh your understanding of Generator Safety procedures.

• Travel with extra caution.
