Naples' Jesse Witten lost in the first round of qualifying at the U.S. Open tennis tournament on Wednesday.
Witten, a Lely High School graduate, lost to Bjorn Phau of Germany, 6-3, 6-4. Phau won the last three games of the first set.
Witten, 25, had made it all the way through qualifying and into the Open in 2006, losing to Paul Goldstein in the first round. The University of Kentucky All-American has played on the challenge series and in World TeamTennis.
Witten had won the Purnell-Thomas Memorial Tennis Tournament in Salisbury, Md., on Monday, winning $8,000.
