— Delayed by tropical storm Fay, the first formal committee meeting to discuss the possibility of the city running an electric utility will be held Wednesday.

The electric municipalization committee’s first meeting is 2:30 p.m. at the Fire Station Training Room near the San Marco Road entrance. The meeting was originally scheduled for Aug. 18, however threats of Fay postponed the meeting.

Marco Island City Councilman Jerry Gibson is the non-voting chairman of the electric committee, which has approximately 30 members looking into whether the city may be able to better operate the utility better than the islands current electricity provider, Lee County Electric Cooperative.

Serving as the city staff liaison, Public Works Director Rony Joel will be presenting the issue to the committee members. City Attorney Alan Gabriel will be instructing the members on the Sunshine Laws, which may require some members to not discuss city takeover of the electric utility outside of publicly announced meetings.
