Saturday’s First Annual Tri-City Basketball Tournament turned into the Kaleb Darrett scoring clinic as the 12-year-old sharpshooter from Fort Myers led his PAL team to the champion’s trophy.

Darrett fired in 63 points in PAL’s two-game sweep with a 30-point debut in its 48-47 squeaker over Sports Camp, Inc. of Marco Island before tacking on 33 more in a 56-30 win over the Marco Junior Magic All-Stars in the championship game.

Wesley Lancaster paced Sports Camp, Inc. with 19 points against PAL before throwing in 18 as Sports Camp topped the Marco Junior Magic All-Stars, 47-23, for a second-place finish in the tourney. Jarrod Jackson’s 21 points led the All-Stars in its loss to PAL.

The Tri-City Tournament was sponsored by the Marco Island’s Parks and Recreation Department, under the direction of Paul Johnson.

“The best players had been selected from each Marco under-12 Junior Magic League team this past season for the event making up the squad that played here today,” Johnson said.

Four teams were scheduled to play, but one of the Fort Myers teams did not compete as planned. Johnson was still happy with the day’s competition and was already looking forward to a Second Annual Tri-City Tournament next year.

“Definitely,” he answered on having the event again.

“We realized at the beginning stages of planning something like this there might be snags since two of the teams would be coming from another county (Lee) and the distance involved,” he added. “I’m a little worn out right now after refereeing all the games, but once I rest up a little bit, I’ll be looking forward to an even bigger and better tournament next year!”
