The Marco Island Charter Middle School baseball team opens its season Wednesday, hosting Seacrest Country Day School. Alex Galiana, manager of the Marco Island Charter Middle School varsity baseball team, has a lot of talent.
Their season begins Wednesday when the Eagles host Seacrest Country Day in a Southwest Florida Middle School Baseball League game. The junior varsity game begins at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 6:15 p.m. The games are played at the city diamond between Tommie Barfield Elementary and Charter schools.
Six solid starters returning are eighth graders Matt Gerhardstein, Patrick Doyle, Kit Fowler, Marc Milk, Alex Jarrett and Hayden Hanscom. Eighth graders also pleasing Galiana are Luke Bergen, back after a year off and Joe Marinaro.
Seventh graders to see action are Reno Landers, Kyle Mitchusson, Cooper Fulcher, Kenny Moss and Eli Henderson.
“Overall, I think we have a very strong team,” said Galiana. “With this kind of experience I’m expecting a good season. Our nemesis may be the same as last year, pitching.”
Kit Fowler will be back on the mound and also will play third base.
“I think Kit can give us quality innings and lefty Hayden Hanscom can be very good,” said Galiana. Hanscom also will play first base.
“I’m happy to have Luke Back,” Galiana said. “He will be our utility guy, able to play second base, shortstop, or pitcher.”
Gerhardstein returns at shortstop, Doyle at third, Milk at catcher and Jarrett at second base and will play the outfield. Also roaming the outfield will be Doyle, Marinaro, Mitchusson, Henderson, Stoliker and Moss.
Landers will see time backing up Milk and playing some third base.
The Eagles were 6-4 a year ago, making the league’s championship playoff game.
Galiana’s coaches are Bryan Milk, Chris Fowler and Tony Sans.
Sans and Galiana will coach the JV team, consisting of Jeff Leonia, Alonso Lara, Paul Grisko, Areeb Chaudhry, Sean Lampos, Adam Hurdis, Fidencio Mireles, Parker Nettles, William Bott, Corey Snyder, Greg Trzyna and Sam Huettel.
