If you were driving or walking past the YMCA last Sunday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., I am sure you heard the various sounds filling the air.

People shouting, clapping, for their favorite contestants; hard rock music blaring from the speakers; skateboards slapping against the hard wooden boards as the contestants demonstrated their skills.

All this, plus sunny skies, cool drinks and hot pizza from Little Caesars of Marco Island. This was the scene of the second in the series of the “Shark of the Park” skateboard and in-line skate competition held at the “Upon a Star” Foundation Skate Park.

Over 40 kids ranging from Kindergarten through eighth Grade competed for trophies in different categories based on their skill level. As these competitions continue, the skill levels increase and you notice how this event is more professional and slick from the previous contests.

Sponsors of the event now include the Street One BMX Bike and Skate Shop of Naples who were the judges of the event as well as the half time entertainment.

Also on hand was Ron Jon Sports Shop of Fort Myers to judge and award a very special prize to the most congenial contestant and awesome kid: Casper Vosburgh.

Other sponsors included Little Caesars Pizza of Marco Island, Jukebox Productions DJ Service and Bug Free Pest Control who donated the funds for the purchase of the trophies awarded to the winners.

The “Shark of the Park” trophy was up for grabs with the defending champion Hagen Smith going up against Connor Bowden who defeated Hagen by one point to become the new “Shark” until the next contest.

Bring in a friend that day and when they join the “Y”, you both get a free gift.

So, mark you calendar for Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.
