Almost Famous Mel’s came close to being famous when it nearly knocked off undefeated Cocomo’s in the City Men’s Softball League.
There were several lead changes as Mel’s kept the game close, but just couldn’t upset Cocomo’s, losing 17-15.
It was a hitting barrage by both teams as Mel’s record slipped to 4-4. For Cocomo’s, now 8-0, Mike Watkins slammed out four hits, John Stillwagon, Dan Noyes and Niels Stone each had three hits, with Stone slamming a home run and Richard Busch, Scott Gibbs, Kevin Hennings and Dave Rice Jr. having two hits each.
Gary Skender led Mel’s with four hits, Jason Berning and Chris Quinton, three hits each and Pat McGuire and Chris Hadek, two hits each. Mel’s tried to give McGuire a 42 birthday gift, but came up short.
The other two games on Thursday were blow outs. Nacho Mama’s drummed Capt. Brien’s. 16-4 and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church downed DaVinci’s, 16-1.
Zach Luetkemeyer knocked out three hits and Santo Gentile, Bill Hoopes and Greg Curry had two hits each for Nacho Mama’s. Jerry Bonfitto knocked out two hits and Kyle Prevett hammered a home run for Capt. Brien’s.
Joe DiSciullo had two hits for DaVinci’s, but the power was with St. Mark’s. Donny Montroy, Mark Canaday and Kevan Kirby recorded three hits each, while Tim Dillingham, Lee Vanderjagt and Ernie Borden had two hits each for St. Mark’s.
League standings are: Cocomo’s, 8-0, Nacho Mama’s, 6-2, Almost Famous Mel’s, 4-4, St. Mark’s, 3-4, DaVinci’s, 2-4-1, Capt. Brien’s, 1-6-1 and Sand Bar, 1-6.
Thursday night’s games pit St. Mark’s and Sand Bar at 6, Nacho Mama’s and DaVinci’s at 7:15 and Almost Famous Mel’s and Capt. Brien’s at 8:30.
