It’s happening Wednesday! Mel and Cathy Slawik will kick-off their annual, week-long birthday party Wednesday, July 23, to mark the seventh anniversary of the year (2001) they finished construction on the brand new building and opened Cathy O’Clarke’s Irish Pub & Grille, located at 591 S. Collier Blvd. in Marco Walk.

The week of specially-priced dinners and specialty drinks will conclude with the actual “We’re Seven Years Old Birthday Party!” on July 30, including a real birthday cake, made-from-scratch and baked by Cathy O’Clarke Slawik, just like she has done in past years (really, she said so herself)!

“It’s our way of saying thank you to all our guests and the friends that we’ve encountered over the years,” said Cathy’s husband, Mel Slawik, explaining that they bought the lot on the corner of Winterberry Drive and South Collier Boulevard first and then started construction on the building.

The Fat Pelican, their first business on the island opened in 1993 and located up the road on South Collier was moved (in spirit, not physically) and built next to Cathy O’Clarke’s dining room entrance. Mel noted that the Fat Pelican’s 15th annual anniversary celebration will take place in November.

“The Fat Pelican has been around longer, and we started out with beer and wine but the deli came later, and then the pub with a special dinner menu, and a few years ago it’s been remodeled into the beautiful Fat Pelican Sushi Bar next door to Cathy’s,” noted Cathy Slawik, “But the Irish Pub & Grille has always been on my mind — something Mel and I talked about and wanted.”

Cathy told the Eagle that Mel planned a different entree and appropriate drink for each day and served from 4:30 p.m. beginning tonight.

“Wednesday night, July 30 we’ll be having our actual celebration. That night we’ll have Harley the Impressionist stating at 8 p.m.,” Cathy explained,” We’ll be serving our special celebration dinner — our Surf and Turf for $21.99 that’s usually over $30 on the regular menu, and a slice of my birthday cake is included for dessert. Mel has a bunch of specially-priced Birthday drinks planned for that night — we hope you’ll come in and celebrate our birthday with us this week!”
