What a week! Just as we wait in anticipation for our birthday or Christmas or another special day, so do we anticipate the start of summer camp at the Greater Marco YMCA.
I can’t believe the first week of summer camp is over! The first week of camp was a learning experience for both campers and counselors, a time to meet new friends and rediscover friends made from last years camp.
Themes for the first week were “Summer Safari” for grades K-2 and the 3 to 6 grade students had fun with “Pizza and Pasta Week”. Some of the games and activities we took part in included “Flour Face Painting” where we took ordinary flour and tried to make the funniest or messiest design. Tuesday the 3-6 grades went to the Naples Zoo and the K-2 grades went to Port O’ Island’s Capt. Barry’s for boat rides.
Wednesday was group day and we all went to the Aquatic Center. Thursday we went bowling at Woodside Lanes. I scored a 300 — 100 the first game, 100 the second game and 100 the third game. Other activities and games played this week included learning some gymnastic moves, playing Hungry Hungry Hippo and enjoying some fun time in the pool.
The second week starts on Monday. Have you registered your child for summer camp? Camp theme for the K-2 grades is “Island Style/ Pirates” and the theme for the 3-6 grade campers is “Kid City.” Crafts and activities are based on the theme week. Field trips scheduled for this week include visits to the Aquatic Center, Germain Arena, Cambier park and the Naples Zoo. Pool days are also scheduled, weather permitting.
Two Specialty Camps begin on June 9. The Greater Marco YMCA welcomes Lee Brovitz, international recording artist and music producer, who will conduct a “Guitar Camp.” You supply the guitar.
The other camp starting June 9 (through June 13) is Computer/ Swim camp. Participants will learn swim techniques in the afternoon and expand reading and math skills through fun computer activities in the morning. Boys and girls entering grade three through grade eight can participate in this fun and exciting program. Campers are to meet at the Greater Marco YMCA Aquatic Center.
Specialty camps still taking reservations are Zoo Camp, Theater Camp, Skate Camp, Camp Rock, Cheer Camp, All Skills Volleyball, Leadership Training, British Challenge Soccer, and Strength Training.
Finally the Greater Marco YMCA is proud to offer Adult Co-ed Indoor 5:5 Soccer. The games will be held on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the “Y” Gym. Cost is only $25 per player or $200 per team. First week of games is slated for June 14.
