Williams named superintendent of Virginia school district

Collier County Assistant Superintendent Eric Williams has accepted a position as superintendent of the York County School District in Yorktown, Va.

Williams is not a stranger to the area. He student-taught at Bruton High School while earning a degree at the College of William and Mary in 1988, according to a report in the Newport News Gazette.

"I am attracted to York County’s strong tradition of rigor and excellence and its focus on the success of all students," Williams wrote in a statement, which is available on the York County Schools Web site. "I have fond recollections of student teaching at Bruton, and returning to York County will feel like coming home. On a personal level, my wife and I are excited about raising our two school-age children in York County."

Williams has worked as an educator for 18 years, the past 11 in Naples. He has been a teacher, dean, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and interim superintendent. He has a master's degree in public policy from Harvard University and a doctorate in educational leadership from Boston University.

In York County, Williams will supervise a school system of about 13,000 students. Williams will replace Superintendent Steven Staples, who is retiring after 17 years.
