A pair of Naples area authors helped Goodwill to promote its first-ever summer reading program on Friday, June 20. Naples resident M.B. Weston and Estero's Karen Freysinger appeared at the Fort Myers Goodwill Retail and Donation center on Plantation Road for Friday's "Ready... Set... Read!" kickoff ceremony.
Weston, a young adult fantasy writer, read a portion of her book "The Elysian Chronicles: A Prophecy Forgotten" to an enthusiastic crowd of children at the store. Freysinger entertained the younger kids with her children's book, "The Adventures of Countess Pigula: Her Royal Imagination." Another Southwest Florida author, Mary Beth Lundgren, also read one of her works.
"We're thrilled by the amount of support we've received on this project," says Kirsten O'Donnell, Director of Public Relations for Goodwill. "Having three local authors come read to kids in our store really helped us promote our summer reading program."
Goodwill is offering the "Ready... Set... Read!" program in all 22 of its Southwest Florida locations. Children entering grades K-8 can enter the six-week reading program by making a purchase of $10.00 or more and receiving a free kids book and reading program bookmark. The program ends August 4, 2008.
Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida, Inc. builds lives, families, and communities-- one job at a time by helping people with disabilities and other barriers to employment discover and develop their full potential through work and career development services.
