— Help the Shelter for Abused Women & Children transform young lives by donating new back-to-school merchandise for children accessing life-saving programs and services through the nonprofit domestic violence center.

"When reality strikes, literally, and our families flee the abuse, their primary concern is safety, not whether they’ve remembered to grab the kids’ school books and uniforms,” explains Shelter Residential Manager Lillian Mendez. “While they focus on healing from the abuse, the Shelter staff focuses on meeting their basic needs – everything from food and shelter to clothing and, at this time of year, school supplies for the kids.”

A certified domestic violence center, the Shelter for Abused Women & Children has offices in Naples and Immokalee, and serves Marco Island, Bonita Springs and all points in-between. For the 2008-2009 school year the following new supplies are needed:

Gift cards to Wal-mart, Target, Publix, Payless Shoes & similar stores; School Uniforms; School Shoes; School Clothes; Backpacks; White Board Markers; Kleenex; Lunch Boxes & Thermos; Protractors; 1, 3, 5 Subject Notebooks; Elmer’s Glue; Glue Sticks; Children’s Scissors; #2 Pencils; Black Pens; Blue Pens; Red Ink Pens; High Lighters; Pocket Folders (some with prongs); 3-Hole Binder Paper (loose leaf); Rulers; Primary Color Paint Sets (watercolors); Pencil Boxes; Construction Paper; Washable Crayons; Washable Colored Pencils; Washable Markers; Erasers; Binders (∏, 1, 1 ∏, 2 in.); Calculators; Writing Tablets; Marbled covered composition notebooks; Baby Wipes; Children’s mats; Gallon-size plastic bags

According to Mendez, “Gift certificates and cash donations are always welcome as they allow us to secure school clothes or uniforms, pay for sports or band equipment and purchase other supplies throughout the year since new families are always arriving in search of support.” She concludes, “While the school system is helping them build their minds, we’re helping them heal to create more peaceful lives.”

The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, a state certified domestic violence center, provides programs and services crafted to prevent domestic violence before it begins; advocates for societal changes to end domestic violence; and meets the immediate and long-term needs of victims and survivors of intimate partner abuse.
