Brian Gilmore, left, and Jim Timmerman have sealed a business arrangement in which Gilmore's company will install and maintain seawalls using Timmerman's self-invented system that uses helical screws to secure walls from the waterside.
Embracing a system
It takes one expert to recognize another ... and strike up a mutually beneficial business arrangement.
Collier Seawall & Dock, LLC — a Marco Island based seawall, dock and boatlift installation firm — has become an authorized dealer for the Dynamic Seawall Maintenance System.
DSMS is a locally invented system for seawall maintenance and repair, and Collier Seawall & Dock owner Brian Gilmore, enthuses about incorporating the technique into his existing business.
DSMS was invented and tested locally by Island resident James Timmerman as a non-invasive method for repairing seawalls and other types of retaining walls.
Using marine-grade, stainless steel helical anchors that are installed from the waterside of the property, the system has been praised and approved by engineers, contractors and environmentalists from around the State.
The system has been used successfully to maintain failing walls throughout south Florida, and Timmerman estimates more than 1,500 tie backs have been installed since he invented the system close to five years ago.
While Gilmore and Collier Seawall and Dock will utilize DSMS to maintain existing walls, the firm also plans to aggressively pursue the use of the patented tieback system as a strengthening method in new wall construction.
“By utilizing DSMS in the building of new seawalls, we’re actually taking a proactive measure to strengthen the wall, extend its life and prevent structural failures,” Gilmore said.
Collier Seawall and Dock builds new concrete seawalls, wooden and vinyl docks and walkways and installs pilings and boat lifts for both residential and commercial customers.
The company is the exclusive Hi-Tide boat lift dealer for Marco Island and also installs the system in Naples.
According to Gilmore, the firm provides residents with a free inspection of their seawalls and other waterfront structures.
