With go-fast boats increasingly falling prey to thieves in the area, the Cedar Bay Yacht Club is partnering with area law enforcement to host “Dock It and Lock It,” an educational and social event to teach boaters about vessel security.
The event gets started at 1 p.m., March 19. Free food and refreshments will be available starting at 4 until the event’s end at 6:30 p.m. The Cedar Bay Yacht Club is located at 705 East Elkcam Circle.
Boaters interested in improving the security of their watercraft can peruse a display of electrical and fuel cut-off switches and participate in a contest to see if they can “steal” a boat.
“A specially equipped boat will be docked at the Cedar Bay Yacht Club that has been equipped with some special ‘anti-theft’ devices,” a flyer states. “The keys will be on board... but hidden... and you can have five minutes to get the engines started and keep them running for one minute.”
The yacht club will be joined by the Collier County Sheriff’s Crime Prevention Section and Marine Bureau, as well as the Marco Island Police Marine Unit, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Sea Tow. Contact the Cedar Bay Yacht Club service department for more information at 394-9533.
