It is books galore at the Tommie Barfield Elementary’s (TBE) annual Scholastic Book Fair this week in conjunction with the school’s Race to Read program.
TBE media specialist Debra Houghtaling looks forward to the book fair every year.
“The book fair is one of the ways we raise funds for the library,” she said. “We use the money for all the fun programming we do. The kids are excited. I had a student tell me that he’s been a fan of the book fair since he was in kindergarten.”
That student is second grader Colt McGee, 8, who’s making his third visit to the book fair.
“I always gather up my allowance for the book fair,” he said. “They have lots of tools that we can use for school, like bookmarks, erasers, and pencils. As far as books, I’ll be looking for Charlie Brown books and Captain Underpants books.”
Second grader, LorryLyn Sullivan, 7, stopped in to preview the book fair.
“I’m looking forward to getting new books,” she said. “I like the Spiderwick Chronicles and the Harry Potter books. Last year I bought some posters, pencils, and books.”
On Friday a Green Eggs and Ham breakfast will be served in the cafeteria. Students and their families may shop early that day, with doors opening at 7:30 a.m.
