As residents and visitors to Marco Island, we have many opportunities to visit the rare and beautiful habitats that surround us.
Availing ourselves of these resources comes with responsibilities, however, which means that no one should be taking live animals, especially shellfish, from the beach.
Shockingly, visitors to Tigertail Beach have been filling paint buckets with the crabs. Some people may not know that Tigertail is a very rich bird habitat and when they take these crabs away, in buckets, they are degrading the food chain.
I would assume that no one is breaking into your home and filling their paint buckets from your refrigerator, so please respect the fact that many people and organizations donate time and money to maintaining Tigertail’s wildlife and habitats.
It’s also illegal to carry live shellfish from beaches in Collier County. They’re cute, but probably not worth the citation you’ll collect that will require you to appear in court — not a tempting prospect when you’re in town for only a few days. The park’s stewardship organization, Friends of Tigertail, has requested that beachgoers carry their cell phones and report wrongdoers to the gatehouse at 394-2793.
