Moments With Marco Island
In collaboration with his wife, Rae, Jeff Bonaventure wrote and designed the book — Moments With Marco Island.
People manifest their first impressions of Marco Island’s myriad charms in different ways.
Some return for regular vacations, others take the plunge and buy property, but Jeff Bonaventure had a slightly different angle after first heading over the Judge S.S. Jolley Bridge in 2004.
Many different angles, in fact, as he criss-crossed the island at all times of the day and night photographing every imaginable scene that presented itself.
The result is a coffee table book featuring some of his work, but one in which his extended captions are intended to enlighten people about the pulse of the island as well.
“It’s basically a tourist book,” Bonaventure says.
In collaboration with his wife, Rae, Bonaventure wrote and designed the book — Moments With Marco Island — on his computer, and then published it through an online company called Blurb.
The book is heavy with assorted wildlife shots, nature photography and everyday scenes from the island itself, some appropriately creative and others more of the snapshot variety.
The original idea, Bonaventure says, was simply to have the pleasure of publishing a book, but he’s since decided to have a shot at a little commercial success.
For that reason, he plans to update the book with new shots and text, and also plans to produce a yearly calendar highlighting some of his photography.
Costs he said, are proportional to print orders, so he hopes to lower the current on-demand price of around $50 (his own per-copy cost is $45) to much lower.
One avenue he thinks might fit the bill is selling bulk copies to Realtors who’re always looking for novel gifts for home buyers.
In addition, he’s in touch with local bookstores, while at least one chain store has shown early interest in stocking his book.
Bonaventure, who holds a bachelors degree in photography, said he thought there was a niche on Marco for this kind of book.
“I’d seen one other coffee table book, but it was shot in the 90s,” Bonaventure says.
He plans his next visit/shoot on Marco some time around November this year.
