The inaugural performance by Southwest Florida Ballet, Inc. takes place this weekend in Naples. The not-for-profit company is the first of its kind for the southwest Florida area.
“We’ve haven’t tried this here before, but we think Naples is the perfect place for a ballet company given its community’s reputation as an enthusiastic supporter of the arts,” according to Abdelazis Roque, the company’s artistic director.
Southwest Florida Ballet, Inc. is a pre-professional ballet company which provides classical training for serious dancers ages 13 and up. This weekend will be the first opportunity for members of the fledgling ballet company to show off their talents.
Company members along with Roque, who is a professional classical ballet dancer, will perform contemporary and classical works including “Flames of Paris,” “Flower Festival,” and two pieces not often performed in the United States – “Fairy Doll” and “Majissimo.”
“The performances include choreography with the intention of showcasing the talented dancers that were selected at the initial audition held in March,” Roque said.
Tickets are still available. The 2008 Gala Performances will take place this Friday, May 9th at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 10th at 6 p.m. at Lely High School’s auditorium located at 1 Lely High School Boulevard in Naples.
Tickets may be purchased at the door, or by calling The Ballet Institute at 239-285-3000. Ticket prices are $20/adult, $15/student.
