In honor of National Safe Boating week, May 17 to 23, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be holding vessel exams May 18 at Naples Landing from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Remember, canoes and kayaks can also be examined! Also, safe boating literature will be handed out at Naples City Dock.
According to the most recent U.S Coast Guard statistics compiled in 2006, Florida has more registered boats than any other state.
* Two-thirds of fatal boating accidents victims drowned; nearly 90 percent of them were not wearing life jackets.
* Alcohol use is ranked number one as a contributing factor in boating accidents, with 133 alcohol use-related boating fatalities in 2006.
* Consistent with previous years, 80 percent of boating fatalities occurred in boats where the operator had not received boating safety instruction.

“Come with me and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination.” This is the first sentence in the song “Pure Imagination,” from the 1971 Academy Award nominated motion picture “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” What a world it was for five lucky kids who had a golden ticket! And the chance to experience a world of pure imagination locally comes as Sea Gate Elementary School’s fourth- and fifth-grade students perform “Willy Wonka, Jr.” The musical production will begin at 7 p.m. May 21, at The Philharmonic Center for the Arts. Admission is free. Information: Hermanru@collier.k12.fl.us.

The SONA Gallery presents “I Still Am,” a fresh new collection depicting the artist Trinh Mai’s quest to connect with the subconscious and the spiritual, to make the intangible tangible and the unseen visible. The exhibit will showcase a diverse series of paintings embracing a universal sense of spiritual and emotional freedom. This exhibit is “who I am and who I am trying to be,” explained Mai. “It represents the past, present and future.”
The collection is Mai’s effort to balance between abstract and figurative art. Show dates are Sunday through Friday. Information: 3570 Bayshore Drive, Naples; 530-7662
