Letter To the Editor: An open letter to John Arceri

Er ... Dear John: I‘ve read your amusing letter to City Attorney Gabriel complaining about some Marco citizens, including City Councilor Chuck Kiester, who don’t like you very much and have written newspapers of their disapproval.

Your letter seems confused on exactly what you want poor old Mr. Gabriel to do for you: He’s already said “Any citizen has the right to offer their insight to the city and this is no different.” To this you respond: “There is a need for a more official public statement from the city … as soon as possible.” This doesn’t make sense. Are you demanding protection under a special, new City ordinance?

John, you wisely chose not to run for a second term as councilor. This effectively served notice to the people of Marco Island that you no longer wished to represent, or work on behalf of, their interests. However, because you then continued to insert yourself into all manner and areas of city affairs, it’s not unreasonable for the ordinary Marco Islander to suspect you might have an agenda perhaps more compelling than simply the wonderful sense of civic duty you claim. Marco’s increasing intolerance for bull droppings probably produced the criticism you’ve received and are now complaining about.

John, your dedication and devotion to Marco seems unappreciated and is obviously causing you anguish. Please consider this advice from a mind far greater than ours: “If you can’t stand the heat, get the h--l out of the kitchen!”

Mr. Columbo: Your letter is the one that is amusing. You are so out of touch it isn't even funny. First, it should be obvious to all of the vocal minority, that if Mr. Arceri had the time and desire to run for Council again, he also would have been elected by a Landslide Majority, as were Recker, Gibson and Trotter. If you do not accpet that, then you really are out of touch with our Citizenry and probably should move or shut up. There is NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT FACT !!!
Second, passion is nothing to scoff at. I guess you are aware that Undergrounding Power Lines increases property values 10-15% in a Community. Or that Undergrounding Utility Lines, over time, in a Hurricane prone area saves money, outage time and decreases loss of life and allows us to return to our homes earlier during disasters. I, for one, appreciate Mr. Arceri's passion and contributions as a citizen to our Island. I often send e-mails to Council providing information on areas of my own personal expertise. Mr. Kiester's comments and actions regarding Mr. Arceri, in my opinion, border on slander and deformation of character. I would encourage Mr. Arceri to pursue a lawsuit against Mr. Kiester. And, I would encourage Mr. Arceri to include anyone else, including you (per your letter), in a lawsuit pertaining to anyone that publicly attacks his character.
This is a Land Of The Free and we have the right of Free Speech. But your letter and the comments by Mr. Kiester do not fit this criteria.

Mr. Issler, encouraging a citizen to file suit against a sitting Councilmember is not doing our community any good. It is divisive and unproductive. Didn't you and several current councilmembers condemn others for that kind of activity during the last campaign? One lawsuit may result in a counter lawsuit (Mr. Kiester's fitness was questioned in the letter to the city attorney). Some millionaire citizen might one day feel that you have defamed him or her and bring one against you. Can you afford to play in that game? Is that what you want? This type of activity is expensive and profits only the attorneys. Rarely are such lawsuits successful and they never rehabilitate reputations. They serve only to make the slander and defamation more public.

Fossill: I think you shouild address your comments to Mr. Kiester, who made many of his comments while sitting and acting as a City Councilman. I can only speculate, but Mr. Arceri inquiring to the City Attorney may be due to the fact that his Lawsuit may include the City of Marco island, as Mr. Kiester has spoken these liable comments partially in the capacity of a City Councilman.
So get Mr. Kiester to keep his mouth shut and we all will be happy or at least happier and less exposed.

With all due respect, my comments were relevant to this aricle and appropriately directed to you.

Ed,
All of a sudden you have a new "quote: Keep your mouth shut. Kind of crude for such an educated man who know's everything about everything.
