Matt Calcagnini, 65, center.

Cotorey Seals, 58 and Gerard Eustache, 69, guards.

Max Tyler, 76 and Aaron Henderson, 77, tackles.

Those are the numbers to watch as Lely running back Darian Hall often goes through gaping holes as he races to the school’s rushing record.

They showed how it was done in Lely’s 49-7 throttling of St. John Neumann on Friday night.

Hall carried the ball just 10 times, but gained 181 yards, scoring four touchdowns (TD). He actually had a fifth TD on an 82-yard break-away that was called back because of a Lely penalty.

“Hard work and the O line doing an outstanding job makes it possible for me to get the yardage,” Hall says.

Calcagnini, of Marco Island, Seals, Eustache and Henderson, all seniors, led the way for Fortinel Faustin to top all Collier County school runners in 2007.

“Calcagnini and Cotorey took their lumps starting as sophomores,” John Principe, offensive coordinators says. “It is a total transformation from boys to men.”

Principe also praises Brian Johnessee, Lely’s offensive line coach.

“Coach Johnessee has done a fabulous job,” he says The offensive line has worked real hard under him. They are also great kids and fun to be around. I think they have a great future ahead.”

They O line also opened a hole for speedy back Frank Pugh for a 51-yard TD run on the first play of the game.

St. John Neumann tied the game in the second quarter on a 56-yard pass play, Quarterback Anthony DeMeo to Shawon Lee.

Hall and Quarterback Dennis Marcelin did not play the first quarter as a penalty for violating team rules.

Midway through the second quarter they came into the game and Hall immediately responded with a 45-yard touchdown jaunt.

It gave Lely a 14-7 lead at half.

It was abundantly clear in the third quarter that the 1A Celtics couldn’t hang with the bigger and faster 3A Trojans.

In a six-minute span, Hall had touchdown runs of 45, 82 and six yards. Jeff Charelus caught a pass from Marcelin for a 33-yard score.

At 42-7 the mercy rule took effect, which caused a running clock, with no time stoppage for the usual first downs or incomplete passes.

Lely Linebacker Rones Sagesse culminated the scoring with an interception of a DeMeo pass for a 33-yard touchdown.

The Celtics almost scored again on a fake run with running back Will Affleck throwing to a wide open Lee.

Lee raced 70 yards to the Lely 10, but Lely Defensive Back Donald Reseau chased him down and stripped the ball away. Lely’s Quinton Antoine scooped it up and ran the ball back to the Celtics 33-yard line to end any scoring threat.

Lely, 4-1, 1-0 in Class 3A, District 14, hosts Immokalee in a district battle on Friday night.

In 2007 Immokalee ended Lely’s district playoff hopes in a regular season-ending playoff game.
