Letter To The Editor: Dissapointed in paving

To the Marco Island City Council,

I do not send e-mails to the City Council very often. I applaud the quality of the major work on Collier Boulevard and the attendant landscape that has set a standard for road work and ambience for the city. We, as citizens, can be proud of the quality of that work and the attitude of the then city council that caused this achievement on our behalf.

That being said, I am extremely disappointed in the quality of the repaving of Barfield Drive and San Marco Boulevard. It is poor quality, with uneven, undulating surfaces, and this same horrible quality is about to be accomplished on County Route 92 near the Island Nursery. Repaving of many of the side streets is just miserable.

The quality of the repaving should be at least equal to or better than before the Septic Tank Replacement Program (STRP) tore up the roads and streets. Honduras Street and associated side streets are an example of the quality that can be accomplished. San Marco Boulevard between Bald Eagle and Barfield drives is an example of good quality and has sustained its good quality for many years. It can be done.

Just recently, I had an opportunity to raise this issue with one of the council members and has attitude was disturbing, to say the least. He indicated that he has tried to get the staff to do things, to no avail, and that he is only one voice of the council. I reminded him that the staff has a manager and that it is the council that should be setting standards and charge the city manager to implement them.

If road contracts are already signed, the City Council can still cause the grading of ongoing roads and streets to knock off the high spots and use that material to fill the low spots. This can yield a higher quality surface at least equal to the prior surface for little, if any, additional expense; and we, the citizens of Marco Island, deserve this.

Dear Mr. Brandt: I hope that you or one of your friends reads this response and follows through. A very similar letter was written by a citizen when Collier Blvd had work going on for the Storm Drains. You need to check with Public Works to see if the paving you are talking about is the final coat. I believe if you check, you will find that the paving is NOT final and only the first coat. That being the case, you have nothing to worry about and just need to get back to enjoying paradise.
