Your Wellness section (Sept. 24) on dental implants should mention the fact that the bold statement that “anyone you see for implant treatment should require you to have a CAT scan” is solely the opinion of Dr. Eck and is not the standard of care at this time in implant dentistry.
As a board certified oral surgeon, I have placed thousands of implants without obtaining preoperative CT scans. CT scans are indicated in a limited number of cases — of which the benefits must be weighed against the “ risks” (eg. increased radiation dosage, and increased costs to the patient).
More important in the choosing of an implant restoration is the qualifications, credentials and experience of the operator. A preoperative CT does not make a person qualified to place dental implants.
I will do consults for readers at no charge, just so they can obtain the right information.
