The Deltona Corp, designers of Marco Island and a leading Florida developer for years, is “extremely interested” and actively investigating land development in the far west, particularly the booming Phoenix, Arizona area. Frank E. Mackle, Jr., said he was “quite excited and extremely interested.” Key Deltona people have flown to Phoenix and Tucson as a possible land and community development project.
Development of Marco Island’s beautiful Tigertail Beach, owned by the county, stymied by lack of funding, is expected to get an $85,000 state grant this winter. “I feel strongly we will get the grant,” said County Commissioner John Pistor of Marco Island.
The inquiring Eagle asked residents if they thought a traffic light at Barfield and Collier Boulevard was needed. All agreed it was. “Definitely a light is needed,” Jeff Carns said. “There are so many near misses at that corner, especially between 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.”
Compton Miller called it “a dangerous intersection. The cars go all so fast on Collier Boulevard.” Joan Leeber said, “Yes definitely. I think it is dangerous. There was quite a serious accident at that intersection a few months ago.” Shug Dunnavant said, “With a traffic light there we many not see as many light posts hit.”
The Kiwanis Club of Marco Island has installed its officers. They include Leonard Diesselhorst, president; Raymond Sheehan, vice president; Harold Williams, second vice president; Walter Stewart, secretary; Chris Blunt, treasurer; Joe Gordon, past president and directors Ted Ulmer, George Bostwick and Harold Hall.
Tickets are on sale by the Pilot Club of Marco Island for a shopping spree at Winn Dixie. Tickets are $1 each for a $100 gift certificate. The drawing is on Nov. 20. Proceeds will go to the Marco branch YMCA Kinder-Kamp Program.
