Lely has a host of new starters, but not new faces as the Trojans open their season Friday night at Barron Collier.

While knowing that his team needs game experience to grow, second-year coach Steve Pricer said the players know the system.

“They’ve either played on varsity or came up through our program,” Pricer said.

The Trojans had their first test Friday night at Tampa Catholic, where they sustained a preseason loss. Still, Pricer saw plenty of bright moments.

“We moved the ball and our defense played with discipline.” Pricer said. “At the same time, inexperience at some new positions showed, and as a team we made too many mental mistakes.”

Darian Hall, a junior, carried the running load against Tampa Catholic, but Pricer also has Frankie Pugh, Johny Faustin and Quentin Antoine in the wings.

Against Tampa Catholic, defensive back David Isme made a splash with the offense, catching a touchdown pass.

Dennis Marcelin, who played some quarterback in 2007, got his first start, throwing for two touchdowns.

“Dennis played well at times with no interceptions, but he lacked consistency,” Pricer said. “For us to be a success we need a balance of running and passing. The challenge for the offense is to be more disciplined.”

Pricer sees Acelin Estilien, tight end and punter, as a key. Estilien punted well and caught a touchdown pass against Tampa Catholic.

“Our kicking game looks good with Ace and Jerry Reyes for kickoffs and field goals,” Pricer said.

The offensive line is anchored by Matt Calcagnini at center and Cotorey Seals at guard.

Lely’s receivers are Jeff Charelus, Romanthi Mathurin, Matt Costello and Kevin Hassell.

Chareuls was chosen to wear jersey No. 5, in honor of his cousin, the late Ereck Plancher.

Plancher died during spring conditioning drills with the University of Central Florida football team. Cause of death was attributed to a sickle cell trait. The UCF football team opened the season with an “EP” decal on their helmets and the same initials on the football field.

The Lely linebackers corps is led by Emmanuel Eduoard.

“He played hurt (against Tampa Catholic) and still played well,” Pricer said.

The linebackers corps is where the team has depth. Besides Eduoard, the Trojans have Moises Stael Dantes, Faustin, Neil Kinney, Mario Mendoza and Mike Snyder. The free safeties are Wayne Niznik and Donald Reseau.

Pricer, 5-5 his first year at the helm after more than 30 years as an assistant, is encouraged by his team’s work ethic. Pricer said execution and playing intensely on every play will bring Lely positive results.
