NAPLES — Panther crossing signs have been installed along Collier Boulevard between Marco Island and U.S. 41 East, a sign of the endangered cats' widening travel habits.
The Florida Department of Transportation installed two southbound signs near Henderson Creek and two northbound signs near Isles of Capri Boulevard, Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve announced this afternooon.
Sighting and radio-collar tracking data from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have shown an increase in panther use of the reserve's lands west of Collier Boulevard.
In May, an uncollared female panther, estimated to be 2 to 3 years old, was killed after getting hit by a vehicle on Collier Boulevard between the Prime Outlets shopping center and the Silver Lakes Resort and Golf Club.
