Guest commentary: Summer is officially over

Summer is official over and our schools are busy again with children’s laughter and energy. Please be extra attentive when driving in the areas where children are accessing buses or near school zones again. School children are excited and thinking of many things while on their journeys to and from school.

To help protect children drivers should slow down in or near school and residential areas where children are playing. Driving with headlights on, even during the day will help increase safety. It helps children and other drivers see you. While driving, look for clues that children may be present such as school-zone signs, School Safety Patrols, crossing guards, bicycles, and playgrounds. Look for children between parked cars and other objects and anticipate they may dart out in front of your vehicle. This will help keep the children safe as they return to school.

The Parks and Recreation Department has once again had a very busy and successful season during the summer months. Sports camp, fitness classes, MICKYS youth sailing, the fishing Camp, youth tennis lessons and baby sitting certification classes, just to name a few, saw full classes where everyone had a great deal of fun. Our teen center was also jamming all summer long.

On Marco Island the seasons change with little notice. But, the City’s Parks and Recreation Department’s Fall programming offers many ways for residents and visitors to engage in indoor and outdoor activities.

Open registration for the Fall programming is happening now. Whether you are a parent seeking programs for your pre-school age child or an adult looking for an activity or fitness class to meet your schedule, the fall schedule can accommodate. There are many programs also available school aged children, including teens. Check out the city’s Web site to learn more about the fall programming. Visit the Parks and Recreation Web page or call Mackle Park at 642-0575 to learn more.

The City’s Racquet Center also provides many programs, including the every popular City Kids tennis program. For more information please call the Racquet Center at 394-5454.
