An army of cheerleaders are excited about cheering for their Marco Eagles football teams before a home crowd on Saturday at Winterberry Park.

The Eagles cheerleaders have two peewee, junior and senior squads. The girls had the opportunity to practice “off Broadway” when they cheered for their Eagles at First Baptist Academy on Saturday.

“It was an exciting first week,” said cheerleading coach Lyndsi Koszo, who is assisted by Kristi West.

“The girls did great. We have some girls that may have cheered for the Eagles before, but for the most part they are learning for the first time. They have learned some cheers, dancing routines and tumbling. They have full uniforms, along with their poms.”

Cheerleaders range in age from 5 to 13. There are at least 10 cheerleaders for each team.

The youngest cheerleaders perform at the peewee games at 8 and 9 a.m.

“It was a little rough on them the first week, but once they got going they did very well,” Koszo said. It is a bit of a trade off since the earlier teams beat the later-day heat.

Games run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The senior cheerleaders will be featured in Wednesday’s Eagle. On Sept. 24 will be the junior cheerleaders, followed by the peewee squad on Oct. 1.

In Friday’s Eagle the junior football team will be featured, along with highlights of all of last week’s opening-season games at First Baptist Academy.
