— Studio 55 is stepping out of the studio with style — and a video camera.

Beginning Monday, the morning and afternoon Studio 55 News Updates will make way for Studio 55 Video Reports, with the news of the day dictating its time and format on naplesnews.com.

"We've always been innovative here, and this is an exciting new chapter in our Studio 55 vodcasts," said Jonathan Utz, Naples Daily News' managing editor of digital. "Studio 55 Video Report with Carrie Wise will have timely and topical reports each weekday on whatever is the talk of the town, or the quirky, or the surprising. These video reports will add a unique layer, with some personality, to our multimedia reporting."

Wise will produce and host videos on a variety of news topics each weekday. One major difference from the current presentation is that the majority of the work will be done in the field in high-definition video as opposed to the traditional studio format.

"We will provide regular, hosted video reports that offer our viewers a window to what is going on in the community," Wise said. "We still will be focusing on local news, commentary, entertainment and sports."

The online video reports will each tackle a single topic in comparison to the newscast format, but the new reports will retain the Studio 55 brand.

"Although the format of new presentation is different from our past, we feel our Studio 55 has good name recognition in the community and certainly in the industry, where it has garnered significant recognition over the years," Utz said.

Since Studio 55's debut in April 2006, the Daily News' innovative local vodcast has earned critical success in the evolving news industry. Its unique concept featuring the multimedia reporting resources of the Daily News has attracted local, state and national attention.

In last year's Florida Society of Newspaper Editors contest, Studio 55 took first place in a new category: "Innovation That Drives Audience." The award was added "to honor journalistic excellence, by an individual or a team, devoted to readership growth in print or online." In picking the daily Web-based newscast for the award, the judges said, "The industry should be watching (Studio 55) as closely as we are."

Also last year, Studio 55 won Editor & Publisher magazine's EPpy Award for "Best Use of Video in a Web Site," won top honors in the Newspaper Association of America's Digital Edge Awards for "Most Innovative Multimedia Storytelling," and third place for creative use of multimedia in the Inland Press Association's contest.
