It’s a great time to be on Marco Island! We are all looking forward to the month of October, the weather will start changing, the snow birds will be returning and many new programs will begin.
The most exciting program is the “Cycling “program. This program actually begins on Monday and will be offered in three stages. Stage one is “Introduction to Cycle.” Take a 20-minute ride to learn the basic elements and techniques of an indoor group cycling class to ensure a safe and comfortable ride. Stage two is “Cycle.” A 40- to 55-minute stationary cycle workout for beginner and intermediate riders that simulates a real road ride. Stage three is “Super Cycle.” A 45-55 minute ride that will challenge the intermediate to advanced cycle enthusiast.
Cycle classes will be held throughout the week at different time periods to accommodate the “Y” members. Members of the Greater Marco Family YMCA will draft their membership an additional $25 per month for unlimited class usage. Cost for an individual class is $10. You can try any cycling class on Monday and Tuesday for free! Cycle instructors include Jennifer Bristow and Stacy Wittoff. Classes are limited to 13 at any one time. Bike reservations may be taken one hour prior to the class. Members will have priority reservation privileges.
The Adult Volleyball League starts Wednesday. Players are still needed in order to complete teams. Play in the eight-week season for only $75 per person or sponsor a team for $325. Call me for more information at 394-3144 ext. 228.
Youth basketball begins Oct. 4 and continues through Dec. 5. This program is for grades K to fifth and the sessions are divided up by grade. The program is for kids who want to learn how to play the game. Cost is only $25 members and $35 others.
Swim lessons with Dottie are scheduled from Oct. 2 to 12. All swim level classes will be offered.
Ballet and dance will be offered starting the week of Oct. 10. Classes are available from ages 2 to 12.
Classes will be held on Friday and Saturday. Members pay only $45 and $60 for others.
Karate classes for kids will be offered monthly at the “Y” starting Nov. 4. “Karate for Kids” will be for the 7 to 13-year-olds, and “Generational Karate” will be offered to ages 7 to adult. The whole family can attend the same class! Ms. Mary Jenson, a black belt in the art of Uechi Ryu, a classical Chinese form of karate and Okinawan self-defense, is the course instructor. Program fees are only $40 for members and $55 for all others.
I want to invite everyone 25 and up to the first adult dance of the season, which will be held tonight from 7 to 10 p.m. The dance will be outside at the “Dottie Weiner” pavilion. Pizza and refreshments will be served. The dance is open to the public and the cost is only $10.
Family Saturday Snorkeling and SCUBA classes are still available in October.
The Y pool is always available for rental or schedule a birthday theme party at the pavilion.
Sign up for Cardio-Tennis classes and the Round Robins for those who like to play tennis. The Greater Marco Family YMCA singles and doubles tennis tournament is scheduled for Oct. 24 to 26. Go to www.marcoislandymca.org and find the link to USTA to register . Tournament ID is 153701708.
There is something for everyone at your Greater Marco Family YMCA. Hope to see you soon!
