Letter to the Editor: Tax relief?

STORY TOOLS

The headlines on Sept. 16 read, “Marco Council unanimously approves tax relief.” With all due respect to the Marco Eagle, reducing a planned tax increase of 22 percent by the Marco City Council to 16 percent, which is the largest increase in the cities history, is not tax relief.

This is the worst economic times of our lifetime and the bottom is not in sight! All other government agencies; County, School Board, Naples, Bonita, Fort Myers are all taking this crisis seriously and are reducing personnel, cutting programs and capital projects. Marco is only looking at reducing the five requested “additional” employees requested by the city manager and not reviewing existing or projected vacancies to insure the positions are essential for the coming year.

Over $2 million in projects are being carried over from last year to 2008-2009 budget, however, not one line item has been reviewed by the council to re-confirm it’s critical need in the coming year. Until the City Council is 1.) Willing to reduce the budget to last years level and 2.) Cancel the $65,000 for a “second-set” of clay courts at the Racquet Center, and 3.) Cancel the $225,000 to plant grass at Veterans Park, just to name a few, they are doing a great disservice to this community.

As one presidential candidate campaign line expresses, “They just don’t get it.”

Bill McMullan, Marco Island

Dear Mr. McMullan: You could not be more wrong if you tried. In fact, the last line of your letter applies to you and nobody else. The current Council was elected by over a 2 to 1 majority of our citizens. We are made up of all types of social make-up. Younger residents, with and without families, older residents that want the best for our Island, lower, middle and upper class, this is the COMMUNITY !!! And we WANT Veteran's Park grass, we want Racquetball Courts, we want a great looking Marco island. YOU JUST DON'T GET IT !!!! The Community you refer to is NOT you and the 1,000 e-mails that you wave (1/2 of which come back as address unknown). The COMMUNITY is the majority that elected the current Council by a landslide margin. So, nect time you write or speak, why don't you try to be accurate and truthful and say "A small minority of Marco citizens want to say ...." that is the truth. And while we are at it, please try to show a little more respect to the Council when you address these gentlemen. Maybe we should put things in perspective and one day invite the DA that prosecuted you in Central Florida for doing funny things with Public money. Maybe he could explain how you were convicted in lower Court and, only on Appeal, were the charges thrown out. Whatever happened to the Bad Check charge where you wrote a check to the City for Impact Fees with a Bad Check ?? I could not find the reference to the disposition of that charge.

Anyway, stick with the facts and if you want to keep representing a small minority that is a great thing in our Democracy, but just represent yourself accurately.

How much longer is the Eagle going to print McMullans garbage?

To the Editor: Do some research on this character before you give this conman anymore credibility.

Issler, I went to the link you presented and fail to understand what it is you are trying to say. The link shows us why Mr. McMullan is amongst us today. He was obviously cleared of the charges brought against him. Are you trying to say the courts were wrong? Have you no respect for the judicial branch of a democracy? If McMullan gave any more respect to the fellows you admire so much, he would be on his knees and bowing as though they were potentates whose only responsiblity to us is to extract excessive tributes. We are Americans who have a form of government elected by the people, not the other way around. A government that must respect the view of the minority, who in this case happens to be right. Mr. McMullan's letter exhibits a thought process your entry ignores, logic. When economic times are tough you only make them worse by imposing further financial burdens on it's citizens. Clearly cutting back on spending is the solution when one is living beyond their means. We, meaning the citizens are doing it, why cannot our potentates?

Fossill: I suggest you do more research into Mr. McMullan's past, unless you are Mr. McMullan. Unless you did not read, it was the Appeals Court that found Mr. McMullan Not Guilty. He was the one that appealed, as the Lower Court found him guilty. I think if you research deep enough, and we can get the DA if you like, to speak on Marco, you will find that Mr. McMullan was found Not Guilty due to the Legal Process error that was made by a young, inexperienced, DA and had nothing to do with his actual guilt or innocense. But, let me know below, and we will invite the DA to speak at a Rotary or Kiwanis meeting and give us the real story.

Issler, this is the United States and we have a Constitution that lays out basic principals from which our laws derive. Again you show your contempt for our democratic and judicial system when it does not support your view. You are so un-American. If you do not approve of how the system establishes guilt or innosence, you should move to Cuba. Under that system, you could take a position that actually would result in something affecting your personal life. Either you agree and support the system and all is good or you may disagree, accuse the system of being incompetent (as you do here), and simply disapear. Don't you think if the prosecutor had a real case he would have continued to press the issue? Have a good trip and say hi to the brothers when you get there.

Fossill: We are talking about character here, not the Legal System. Sure, Mr. McMullan is an innocent man. But he accuses our Council of not listening and spending our money irresponsibly. My point is that is the Pot calling the Kettle black. That's all. Of course I believe in Democracy. Why do you think I blog !! It is the Democratic MAJORITY here on Marco Island that want Council to vote exactly as they are. Mr. McMullan represents a small MINORITY of voters. That is the only point I am making. When he uses the word "Community" he is mis-using that word in the context he is using it. YEAH, Let's here it for Democracy. The principle that makes Mr. McMullan and his rhetoric insignificant !!!
