Brush fires burning in East Naples, Marco Island

— Firefighters battled small brush fires in East Naples and on Marco Island on Wednesday afternoon.

Around 4 p.m., a 15-acre fire erupted in a wooded area near Manchester Drive in the gated Reflection Lakes community, which is east of Collier Boulevard.

"It was within 100 yards of some of the homes in the Reflection Lakes community," East Naples fire spokesman Greg Speers said. "Then the fire moved northward."

No homes were ever threatened by the fire, which was 90 percent contained by 7 p.m.

Firefighters from Golden Gate, Isles of Capri, North Naples, and the Florida Division of Forestry assisted with the fire. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office had a helicopter and ground units at the scene.

Firefighters were also keeping an eye on a small brush fire near the intersection of Whiskey Creek Drive and San Marco Road on Marco Island.

Michael Weston, a spokesman for the Division of Forestry, said the fire was burning in a wooded area away from any structures.

"Nothing is threatened at all," he said.
